Photos from Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon
Nevada and Arizona
Las Vegas: The Luxor. This is the casino/hotel where I stayed during my trip
(except the one night I went camping at the Grand Canyon).
Las Vegas: The light beam coming out of the Luxor at night.

Las Vegas: And when you need to leave town quickly....
South Rim Grand Canyon: The Grand Canyon lit up at night by an nearly full
moon.
South Rim Grand Canyon: Three friends and I at the rim of the Grand Canyon at
night. From left to right: Gary, Me, Desi, and Paul
South Rim Grand Canyon: Here are Paul, Gary, and I enjoying a roaring campfire
back in camp.
Grand Canyon: A sign warning against what Gary and I did during this trip. We
hiked the South Kaibab Trail from the rim down to the Phantom Ranch along the
Colorado River at the base of the canyon and back out in 1 day. The total
distance was 14+ miles (round-trip) and there was 4800+ feet of climbing. It
'only' took 4 hours to hike down and 'only' another 5-1/2 hours to hike back
up (after a 1 hour break along the river). Luckily this was October, so the
temperatures were not in the extreme range.
Grand Canyon: Here are a few of the views of the Grand Canyon along the South
Kaibab Trail.
Grand Canyon: The two crazy people who did this hike. I'm on the left and
Gary's on the right.
Grand Canyon: That's Gary standing next to a tall Yucca plant. As a point of
reference, Gary is about 6'3" tall.
Grand Canyon: Looking ahead to a section of the South Kaibab Trail. Those switchbacks head
down the steepest part of the trail.
Grand Canyon: Another view of the same switchbacks. You can see how far they
extend down the side of this hill.
Grand Canyon: A burro train heading up those same switchbacks. These burros
are carrying the trash from the Phantom Ranch to the rim of the Grand
Canyon.
We are almost to our turn-around point -- The Phantom Ranch. 4800+ feet
below the South rim of the Grand Canyon.
